Case #001
The Great Cheese Theft
Location: Fable Book Café
Status: Under Investigation
“Cat Crimes HQ?”
“Thank goodness you’ve answered. We’ve had a disaster!”
“Every single piece of cheese has disappeared from Fable Book Café overnight.”
“We’ve searched everywhere. Please — you have to help us.”
One name immediately comes to mind: Kevin — The Cheese Monster.
But Cat Crimes HQ does not arrest suspects without evidence.
You Arrive at Fable Book Café
You push open the front door and step into the café.
Bookshelves line the left-hand wall. Tables, sofas and comfortable chairs fill the seating area beneath the large front window.
At the back-right is the small open-plan kitchen.
“Thank goodness you’re here.”
“Not a single piece of cheese is left.”
“Nothing was damaged, and there are no signs that anyone forced their way inside.”
Where will you investigate first?
The Kitchen
On the worktop you find several cookbooks, each opened to a recipe for creamy cheese sauce.
Evidence Discovered
📖 Cookbooks opened to cheese-sauce recipes
🧀 All the cheese is missing
🥣 Greek yoghurt is missing
🧈 Butter is missing
🥛 Milk is missing
Kevin would happily steal cheese. But would he stop to read a recipe?
The Bookshelves
The shelves appear neat and orderly. Almost too orderly.
Several obvious gaps show where books have recently been removed. Beneath them lies a crumpled cheese wrapper.
Evidence Discovered
🧀 Empty cheese wrapper
📚 Gaps where books were removed
The missing books appear to be the cookbooks now lying open in the kitchen. Somebody deliberately moved them.
The Basement Door
“There is one more place you should check.”
“The door beside the kitchen leads downstairs and out into the alley behind the café.”
A member of staff unlocks the door. You descend the stairs as the noise of the café fades.
The Alleyway
Cardboard boxes sit against the wall. Then you hear snoring.
Curled up in a battered box is Tiggs — The Backyard Scrapper.
Beside him is an almost-empty Tupperware tub filled with thick, creamy cheese sauce.
What will you investigate?
Questioning Tiggs
Detective: “Morning, Tiggs.”
Tiggs: “Is it?”
Detective: “Did you see anything last night?”
Tiggs: “Been up all night defending my territory. Kitten season. Every little furball thinks they can take me on.”
Detective: “What about the cheese sauce?”
Tiggs: “Lunch.”
Detective: “Where did it come from?”
Tiggs: “Something black rushed past. Made me jump. Dropped the tub. Whoever it was kept running.”
Tiggs cannot identify who he saw. He is exhausted, grumpy and far more interested in going back to sleep.
The Cheese-Sauce Tub
The sauce is unusually thick, smooth and creamy. Tiggs is extremely protective of what remains.
Small paw marks around the lid show that whoever carried it was much smaller than Tiggs.
Evidence Discovered
🥣 Almost-empty cheese-sauce tub
🐾 Small paw marks around the rim
Searching the Alley
Near the drain you find the foil lid from a tub of Greek yoghurt. A second plastic food-storage lid is wedged beneath a box.
Evidence Discovered
🥣 Greek-yoghurt lid
📦 Plastic food-storage lid
Somebody has been carrying food in and out of the alley.
Back Inside the Café
“Wait.”
“It wasn't only the cheese and ingredients that disappeared.”
“A number of our Tupperware tubs have gone missing too.”
This was not an impulsive theft. Somebody made the cheese sauce, divided it into tubs and carried it away.
People of Interest Identified
Staff remember several known Cat Crimes criminals behaving strangely around the café.
People of Interest
Every cat on the list appears suspicious. Unfortunately, they are all known criminals.
Kevin — The Cheese Monster
Detective: “Kevin, why were you at Fable yesterday?”
Kevin: “Cheese.”
Detective: “Can you be more specific?”
Kevin: “Very near cheese.”
Detective: “Did you steal it?”
Kevin: “No.”
Detective: “Did you use the recipe books?”
Kevin: “You can cook cheese?”
Detective: “What about the Tupperware tubs?”
Kevin: “I've got a mouth.”
Kevin is black, cheese obsessed and, to put it kindly, a bit thick. The recipes, yoghurt and tubs do not fit his usual behaviour.
Rolo — The Toilet Roll Ripper
Detective: “Why were you hanging around the toilets?”
Rolo: “Nice paper.”
Detective: “The toilet roll, soap, bathroom cleaner, kitchen cleaner and bleach were all moved.”
Rolo: “I was organising.”
Detective: “You were found in the cubicle surrounded by toilet rolls.”
Rolo: “Very organised.”
Rolo has definitely committed a crime. It simply has nothing to do with the missing cheese.
Molly — The Corrupt Calico
Molly was seen meeting several dodgy cats and Fable's boss cat.
Detective: “Who were you meeting?”
Molly: “A few associates.”
Detective: “Dodgy cats?”
Molly: “That is a very judgemental description.”
Detective: “Was the café's boss cat there?”
Molly: “We were discussing territory.”
Detective: “And the cheese?”
Molly: “Not my department.”
Several witnesses confirm Molly remained in the seating area throughout the meeting.
Dumpling — The Greek Yoghurt Thief
Dumpling appears calm, but immediately asks whether Kevin has been arrested.
Detective: “Why are you so interested in Kevin?”
Dumpling: “Because everybody knows he steals cheese.”
Detective: “What about the missing Greek yoghurt?”
Dumpling: “Lots of cats eat yoghurt.”
Detective: “And the creamy cheese sauce?”
Dumpling: “Never heard of it.”
Detective: “You answered that very quickly.”
Dumpling: “Have you arrested Kevin yet?”
Archived Incident
Years ago, Kevin and Dumpling carried out The Great Dairy Heist.
Kevin was supposed to keep watch but became distracted by cheese.
A heavy sliding warehouse door slammed shut on Dumpling's tail, causing damage that could not be repaired.
Dumpling spent months recovering at home with his favourite human mum, Kameelah.
Kevin insists it was an accident. Dumpling has never believed him.
Who Stole the Cheese?
Every cat is guilty of something, but only one planned this particular crime.
The Evidence Does Not Fit
The real culprit remains free.
Dumpling Stole the Cheese
The recipe books, Greek yoghurt, small paw marks, food-storage tubs and Dumpling's reaction to Kevin all point towards the same cat.
Dumpling used a black bag while carrying the tubs through the alley. That was the black shape Tiggs saw.
He made an exceptionally rich, creamy cheese sauce and handed tubs of it to other cats, encouraging them not to ask questions or tell Cat Crimes HQ what they had seen.
Detective: “You used the cheese sauce to buy everyone's silence.”
Dumpling: “I did not bribe anybody.”
Detective: “You gave Tiggs a tub.”
Dumpling: “I rewarded a customer.”
Detective: “And you framed Kevin because of the dairy heist.”
Dumpling: “He was supposed to be watching the door.”
Kevin: “I saw cheese.”
Dumpling: “Exactly.”
Dumpling admits stealing the ingredients, moving the cookbooks and leaving evidence designed to make Kevin look guilty.
